Investigating Reddit’s Data Licensing Policies: An FTC AI Probe Prior to the Forthcoming IPO

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has launched an investigation, known as the ‘Reddit FTC AI probe’, into the data licensing practices of Reddit, with a specific focus on the use of such data in artificial intelligence (AI) training. This investigation has been initiated in the context of Reddit’s upcoming initial public offering (IPO). The investigation was disclosed by Reddit in a recent update to its Form S-1 registration statement, which was submitted to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. While the FTC’s scrutiny might catch some off guard, Reddit has stated in the filing that it was not surprised given the unique nature of the technologies they employ and their business contracts. Despite this, Reddit insists that it has not engaged in any unethical or misleading trade practices.
